You’ve heard the Grimm bothers and their fairytales? Well, Into the Woods Junior is an hilarious take by Lapine and Sondheim on some of your favourite stories from this collection.
The Baker and his wife have been cursed by the witch who lives next door - they are never able to have children! In order to break this curse, they embark on a search for the items which are necessary to release them from the spell. During the course of the show, they manage to swindle, deceive and steal from Cinderella, Little Red Ridding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack (yes, the same Jack who climbed the beanstalk).
Into The Woods Junior is a perfect vehicle for a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors, where each performer shoulders an equal weight. Sondheim - not a composer one would usually associated with young performers - has written a wonderful score which has been adapted to make it easier - though still challenging for young performers.
Into The Woods Junior is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they've grown up, and the ethical issues raised therein.
