Missa Mirabilis... in Colorado... In concert and on disc

08 April 2014

Missa Mirabilis

The orchestral version of Stephen Hough’s Missa Mirabilis has now had two performances in the US. The first in April 2012, where it was performed byt the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and Symphony Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan and very recently with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of the orchestra’s chief conductor, Andrew Litton.

Robin McNeil, writing for Opus Colorado says of the work: “It is a breathtaking composition. Immediately noticeable was the orchestration of this piece… His orchestration is certainly as skillful as that of Ravel or Berlioz. There is no question that Hough’s composition is a twentieth century work, for it used twentieth century harmonies… But the element of orchestration and expert choral writing is what left an indelible impression upon this first hearing. It was tremendous.”
