About us

Founded in 1946 as the English Theatre Guild, Josef Weinberger Plays have since become one of the leading play publishers and representatives of stage performance rights for many of the world’s foremost authors and estates. Initially formed to represent the stage plays of the writers at the Film Rights Ltd agency, in 1984 the company was bought by Warner Chappell Music who expanded the catalogue by concentrating on the acquisition of contemporary writers, and in 2000 the company moved to Josef Weinberger (now Music Theatre International Europe) to complement their extensive catalogue of musical theatre works.

From international playwrights including Arthur Miller, John Steinbeck, Eugene O’Neill and Ingmar Bergman to a wealth of British authors such as John Godber, Ray Cooney, Peter Gordon and Debbie Isitt, Josef Weinberger publish playscripts and license performances of our author’s works around the globe. In association with our North American counterparts Dramatists Play Service of New York and many leading literary agents, we have grown to represent over a thousand plays throughout the UK, Europe and internationally, focusing on providing a first class service to our authors and their works. Building a formidable catalogue of plays ranging from contemporary comedy and drama to adaptations of classic literary titles, we aim to offer something to appeal to every theatre company for an upcoming production.
